Finding Good Carpenter or Designer for Our Home and Furniture

Am I pro designer? I was wondering the other day how much I learned in renovating our house, the more pleasant, but without training and without qualifications. Doing things yourself (instead of using real pros) is always a good idea regarding pocket money, but now I ask myself: Is this the time spent learning all these skills – construction, decoration and repair worthwhile? Especially when I could go and earn money to hire a professional to do my work.

Apart from the many cups of tea I’d made a pro decorator or more months resident and a carpenter like that, I realized that I could have saved if I had paid pros. Bein sure I could continue to do things myself. I work at my own anyway so it would have been easy to calculate the cost difference.

However it is difficult to always be sure to find a good carpenter or decorator, then once the job is done, we usually know right away if they were good or not.

Then there is the cost of all tools, materials and clothing that I paid for my work home – finally, my barn, because you live as I have said elsewhere a farmhouse in Normandy. I do not know how much it needs to complete because I did not spend all my time to calculate – if I ever finish the job. Without doubt it is a lot … But it is investment, and therefore it promotes. Any owner interested in making their own decoration or renovation must be persuaded. And many of the tools and equipment that I purchased are good, then it will last, and it will stay with me.

I could give up DIY and gardening, I could sell my toolbox, and I could hire someone to do that. I calculated that it would be cheaper that way, especially because I earn more per hour as my former business consultant manager that wins pro designer or carpenter – including the cost of cups of tea!

But I like the decor and carpentry. The hammer drill that I bought a year ago is still more or less perfect state, and if I was selling, of course I would get less than I paid. Then, I take great pleasure in completing work. Especially when I’m repairing a portion of the barn or the garden party. The other day I repaired the swing seat to replace a plank of teak. It was hot, and it feels good to be outside rather than in an office.

Between the decor, construction, gardening and carpentry, I prefer to work mostly with wood. Now I wonder if I will change jobs and become a carpenter. That’s one way to save!
